IMEI : International Mobile Equipment Identity

The IMEI is an acronym for International Mobile Equipment Identity. This a unique number given to every GSM, WCDMA, and iDEN mobile phone. The IMEI number is given to satellite phones as well. Usually it is printed on the handset just below battery.

One can also see the IMEI number for any handset using *#06# into the keypad.

The IMEI number can be used to track any GSM phone. In case of a stolen phone it can be tracked. For example, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can call his or her network provider and instruct them to “ban” the phone using its IMEI number. This renders the phone useless, whether or not the phone’s SIM is changed.
